How to Choose the Right Wooden Urn for Ashes: Size, Style and Personalization
Shopping for an urn is not what you want to do. My mission is to make this process a little bit easier, creating pieces that breath beauty, bringing some light in dark times. My urns are not about death, but about celebrating the life of someone who meant a lot in someones life. Choosing an urn is a quiet moment of reflection, where memories, emotions and love come together. When selecting the right wooden urn for ashes, many families want something that feels respectful, personal and comforting. I would like to guide you through this proces so you can make that choice with care, by looking at size, style and personal details that truly matter.
Choosing the correct wooden urn size
Size is one of the most important aspects when choosing a wooden urn for ashes. A commonly used guideline is one cubic inch of urn capacity for each pound of body weight. This ensures there is enough space to hold the ashes safely and respectfully. Many people also choose to split up the ashes between more family members or scatter the ashes partly. In that case you won’t need an urn that can keep all of the ashes.
The capacity of each urn is mentioned in the item description and visible in the item video. I made 3 sections: large, medium and small urns. Large urns may contain all of the ashes, the capacity is 150 c.i. or more. Medium sized urns can contain at least half of the ashes, the capacity varies from 90 c.i. to 150 c.i. Small urns can hold a part of the ashes of an adult. The capacity varies from 30 c.i. to 90 c.i.
If you are unsure about the exact size, choosing a slightly larger urn is always a safe and reassuring option. It allows peace of mind during a time when certainty can be comforting. In case you need help with this decision, feel free to contact me through e-mail.
Selecting the right style
Wooden urns are available in a wide range of styles, each offering a different feeling and expression of remembrance. Some families are drawn to traditional wooden cremation urns with a classic appearance, while others prefer contemporary wooden urns with clean lines and subtle elegance. Minimalist or decorative designs can also play an important role. The style you choose should reflect the personality, values and wishes of the person being remembered. A well chosen urn often feels like a natural extension of who they were.
My urns are all one of kind pieces. Every piece carries its own story, just like the loved one you commemorate. I look with different eyes at trees. I am always curious what is inside. Which treasure is waiting to be shown to the world? In the item description you can read more about the process of creating each piece, the wood, the shape, the colors, the minerals. This all results in a unique tribute for a loved one.
Wood types and finishes
The type of wood greatly influences the look and emotional tone of a wooden urn. Walnut is often chosen for its rich and warm appearance, while maple provides a lighter and more delicate feel. Each wood type adds its own story and atmosphere. The grain, color and finish together create an urn that feels unique and meaningful.
When I select wood to design and create with, I look for hidden beauty inside a tree. Usually that means parts inside the tree where something exciting happens. The hidden beauty can be found at an interesting grain at a branch division, at an old scar in the tree, or even by a special figuration caused by the natural reaction of a tree when it is invaded by insects.
My favorite is Black Locust Burl, because it is a beautiful metafor for life. The tree has been through some rough times. Resulting in beautiful figuring and voids in the wood. These scars give me the perfect opportunity to add more beauty to a piece. As I am a lover of nature I do love gemstones as well. Inlaying the wood with stone is a perfect symbiosis of nature to me.
If you overview my work you will notice that contrast is the fingerprint of my work: rough edges versus smooth surfaces. So many contrasts in life are exciting and give me food for thought. Once I heard someone say ‘there is so much life close to death’. It sounds confusing but I have experienced the truth of this. You can feel the beauty of life so intensely when you face death. Experiencing the beauty of nature can be comforting and inspiring for creating more beauty. Every day I feel motivated to contribute to making this beauty of nature more visible.
Personalized, engraved wooden urns and custom requests
Many families choose personalized wooden urns to create a deeper emotional connection. Adding an engraving can turn an urn into a lasting tribute that speaks quietly of love and remembrance. Personalization options include names and dates, short messages or meaningful quotes, and symbolic designs. An engraved wooden urn allows memories to be preserved in a way that feels deeply personal and sincere.
I have several options to personalize your urn. First I can pyro-engrave the bottom of the urn. This is a simple personalization which is quick and for free. If you want your text visible I can create a stand for the urn with a plate on it. It takes more time and costs 75 euro. The last option is engraving the lid or the urn. It can only be done on an unfinished piece. So either I can create a new lid for a finished piece or I can create a custom urn for you. Please contact me if you are interested in these options.
Price considerations
The wooden urn price can vary depending on several factors, including the quality of the wood, whether the urn is handcrafted or mass produced, and the level of personalization involved. Choosing a high quality wooden urn is an investment in durability, craftsmanship and emotional value. A well made urn offers comfort not only today, but for many years to come.
Conclusion
The right wooden urn brings together size, style and personal meaning in a way that feels honest and respectful. By choosing carefully, you create a memorial that honors your loved one with warmth, dignity and lasting beauty.
