I have fallen in love with Briar burls. It happened on my holiday a while ago. Normally I use wood reclaimed from near my shop. But this football-sized tubers are harvested at the age of 30 to 60 years in Portugal. The wood is light brown to reddish brown, often beautifully figured and very hard. And therefor a challenge but also very rewarding to turn on my lathe. The burls from my new supplier are uncooked and therefor there are quite a lot of cracks in the wood. That offers a perfect opportunity to create a spectacular piece of art. When I create a new piece I first start to thoroughly examine the wood for the possible designs. I decide how to mount it on my lathe and then start turning. The wood is leading me to the best possible shape. What I love about this piece is that the wood around the voids is lighter. So the inlayment gets more attention this way. And the figuring has this specific Burl wood character, which I love a lot. I inlayed all the voids and the cracks with green minerals. In top I have put a beautiful large piece of Dioptase. A perfect tribute to the life of someone who loved nature. The urn is finished with high gloss lacquer. You can clean it with a damp or dry cloth.
