Handmade Briar Burl Wood Urn, Mineral Inlay, Scolesite Lid (230 c.i.)

I look with different eyes at trees. I am always curious what is inside. Which treasure is waiting to be shown to the world? It means a lot to me to keep this in mind creating my pieces. My urns are not about death, but about celebrating the life of someone who meant a lot in someones life. My mission is to create pieces that breath beauty, giving some comfort in sad times.

I have fallen in love with Briar burls. It happened on my holiday a while ago. Normally I use wood reclaimed from near my shop. But this football-sized tubers are harvested at the age of 30 to 60 years in Portugal. The wood is light brown to reddish brown, often beautifully figured and very hard. And therefor a challenge but also very rewarding to turn on my lathe.

The burls from my new supplier are uncooked and therefor there are quite a lot of cracks in the wood. That offers a perfect opportunity to create a spectacular piece of art. When I create a new piece I first start to thoroughly examine the wood for the possible designs. I decide how to mount it on my lathe and then start turning. The wood is leading me to the best possible shape.

I had bought this beautiful Black Tourmaline at the mineral fair. I added white Calcite, Orchid Calcite, Belgian Blackstone and gold in the natural voids for a perfect match with this stunning Tourmaline. The ring in the opening is made of Ebony wood. The base of the lid is made of Briar Burl as well. And so a new piece is born and I feel thankful I could create this. A perfect tribute to the life of someone who loved nature.

The urn is sanded up to 800 grid and finished with clear high gloss lacquer, so it almost feels soft and therefor very pleasant to hold in your hands. You can clean it with a damp or dry cloth.
