Shopping for an urn is not what you want to do. My mission is to make this process a little bit easier, creating pieces that breath beauty, bringing some light in dark times. My urns are not about death, but about celebrating the life of someone who meant a lot in someones life.
Black Locust Burl is my favorite wood, because it is a beautiful metafor for life. This one of a kind piece carries its own story, just like the loved one you commemorate. The tree has been through some rough times. Resulting in beautiful figuring and voids in the wood. These scars give me the perfect opportunity to add more beauty to this piece. As I am a lover of nature I do love gemstones as well. Combining wood with stone is a perfect symbiosis of nature to me. This burl has such an amazing figuring. The wood is dark bronze, it has a golden glow. The inlayed voids in this urn are natural, I never add voids to the wood. If you look closely at the lines in the wood you can see it.
I love the combination of blue and wood. I am very drawn to Lapis Lazuli. It has been much appreciated throughout history. In Egypt is was used to decorate the mummies of emperors. Up until the 18th century it was a highly priced compound to make blue paint know as ultramarin, which means from overseas because the best Lapis came from Central Asia. My favourite painting of Vermeer, the Milk Made has this typical blue in it. The finest quality of Lapis has such a strong appearance that it almost seems unnatural, but I can assure you: it is 100% natural. My supplier offers me the best quality of Lapis.
The color blue has many different meanings. It is the color of the sky and the ocean. In most cultures blue symbolizes sorrow, but it also represents inspiration and wisdom. It can be a calming color as well. Wood combined with blue makes me dream about heaven and earth. I inlayed the voids with blue minerals and gold. I have put a beautiful intense blue piece of Lapis Lazuli on this urn that matches with the inlay. It is a statement of beauty and pure nature. I am very thankful for this tribute to the life of someone who loved nature.
The urn is finished with high gloss lacquer. You can clean it with a damp or dry cloth. The base of the lid of the urn is made of Black Locust Burl as well.
The wood is reclaimed from near my shop. Please keep it out of direct sunlight, don’t place it near a heating source.
